How to Set a Default Reply Audience on X

If you normally choose the same reply audience, save it once and let your next blank post start there.

1. Install and choose your default

  1. Open the Reply Defaults for X listing in the Chrome Web Store ↗ and install it in desktop Chrome.
  2. Reload any X tabs that were open before installation. The extension works on x.com, not inside X’s mobile app.
  3. Open Chrome’s extensions menu and select Reply Defaults for X. You can pin it to the toolbar for easier access.
  4. Keep Apply reply default enabled and choose the audience you want. The selection is saved locally.

For example, choose Verified accounts if that is your usual starting point. You can also save Everyone, Accounts you follow, Accounts you follow and who they follow, or Only accounts you mention.

2. Check a genuinely new blank post

Open a new blank composer on X. Before typing or posting, check the native reply label below the writing area. The label in X—not only the radio button in the extension—is the confirmation of the current post’s setting.

The extension tries to set an eligible blank composer once. You may then change that post’s audience manually without changing the default saved in the popup. The extension does not click Post or send your post for you.

3. If the label still shows the old audience

The composer was already open

A new saved preference does not re-run automation on a composer already handled by the extension. Set the audience manually for that post. Test your new preference on the next new blank composer.

You are editing a draft with text

The extension avoids automatically changing populated drafts. That is intentional: your current writing and any manual reply choice should not be silently overwritten.

X does not show that audience

Open the native audience menu yourself. If your saved choice is unavailable, the extension cannot unlock it and should not silently substitute a different choice. Use one of X’s available options.

The extension or X page was just updated

Save any writing first, then reload X. Confirm that the extension is enabled in Chrome and that Apply reply default is on. If X has changed its page structure, automatic selection may need an extension update.

The interface languages are different

The extension’s settings and notices are English. X’s native labels use your X language setting. The adapter recognizes supported English and Chinese controls; that does not make the extension a translator for the site.

If it still fails, contact @blocktom on X ↗ with your extension version, X language and the audience you expected. Share only a cropped, non-sensitive screenshot if helpful—never your password, access tokens or private draft text.

4. Turn off automation or uninstall

Switch off Apply reply default in the popup to stop applying defaults. Your saved preference remains on the device. To remove the extension entirely, use Chrome’s extension management page; Chrome removes its local extension storage when it is uninstalled.

Neither action changes posts you have already published or removes data held by X.
